It's Thursday. & we're looking at the last supper. We're going to step back in time and take a look at the last hours of Jesus' life. As I mentioned in the first post I am breaking down Passion week. We took a brief look at the week that led up to this day in the coming days we will take a look at an in depth look at what Jesus went through as he was crucified.
We begin today looking at the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread (this was the first day of a 7 day feast.)]
On this day of the first day of the Festival of Unleavened bread it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus' disciples asked Jesus "where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"
Jesus sent Peter & John, two of his disciples telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guestroom, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples? He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them.
They prepared the Passover.
Jesus arrived that evening with the twelve disciples
Jesus washes his disciples feet (An example to us as an act of humble service; we as Christians should be willing to perform the most menial services for one another)
So there they are at dinner; They were reclining at the table and eating.
-in those days the people didn't sit in chairs like we do today. They reclined at a U-shaped table on pillows. They would lean on the table with one elbow and then use the other hand for eating.
Jesus predicts the one who will betray him. They all were at a disbelief that any one of them would betray him. After some time it was finally revealed who it was by giving Judas. A soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus told Judas "what you are about to do, do it quickly." no one else understaood why Jesus said this. (they all thought that since judas was in charge of the money, then Jesus was telling him to buy was was needed for the festival or give someting to the poor.
Judas left.
While they were eating, Jesus took the bread a and gave thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying "takd and eat; this is my bod." then he took a cup and when he had given thanks, gave it to them saying, "Drink from it all of you. this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the gorgiveness of sins. I ttell you, I will not drink from the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom"
Jesus warned them that he would be with them for only a little while longer, and he comforted his confused disciples. He told thethem that they will look for him, but where he is going, they cannot come.
Jesus then predicts Peter's denial John 13:38 " Then Jesus answerd, "will you really lay down your life for me? very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!"
"But Peter declared, ' Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you" and all the other disciples said the same.
Jesus then went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane.
We will take a look at what happens in Gethsemane in the next post.
This is only the beginning. think over what has happened on this evening on the last supper- how do you relate to it? do you identify with any of the people that attended that last supper?
Can you imagine if you were sitting there in that 'upper room' with those men and they were in disbelief that one of them would betray, one of them would disown and that Jesus would soon be going to this place that they could not go to...
