We will be starting to get deep here.
We will be looking at what happened on that Thursday night after the last supper.
It was late maybe around 11:30pm, Jesus went with his disciples across the Kidron Valley to a garden, called Gethsemane. When they entered He said to them, 'Sit here while I go over there and pray.'
Jesus knew that he was facing this... He didn't become angry or grouchy or anything. (after all He was God so he handled everything very well.
So, about this garden, it was a very large garden and full of olive trees. it was a favorite place of Jesus and he often went there to pray.
So Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him farther into the garden and he left the other disciples at the entrance to the garden.
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. "Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me". (Matt. 26:38)
taking a look at that - So Christ was extremely sorrowful and troubled....He was overwhelmed... he was basically going into shock... I mean he says that he is overwhelmed so much with sorrow to the point of death!
that is intense. some say that he suffered from a slight heart attack...
He went further into the garden, he put his prayer shawl and he went further away from his disciples. and fell with his face to the ground and prayed "My father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. yet not as I will, but as you will."
Jesus came out of that deep part in that garden three different times, and each time he found his disciples sleeping, and he told them 'come on, get up, and pray.
It needs to be noted that sometimes people sleep out of frustration,or sorrow or to escape that is happening; that may have been the case for them, since their teacher, and friend was going through extreme sorrow and pain.
After the second time, an angel appeared to Jesus and strengthened him. He began to pray more earnestly and his sweat was like drops of blood.
So - what Jesus was experiencing at this time was a medical condition called :hematidrosis. This can happen when so much stress is upon a person.Sometimes a person will push out from within himself in intense agony, and if they push hard enough, they will either pass out or blood will pass through their veins until it gets in the sweat glands, and essentially will sweat blood. This isn't just a little sweat on the forehead. this is from all pores of his body.
Jesus was in an incredible.
Even though Jesus knew that his death was inevitable, since he was human he still wanted to resist the suffering that was ahead of him
Ever since Judas had left the upper room that evening, he had been very busy. He went to the high priest, Caiaphas. Judas told Caiaphas about the opportunity they had to arrest Christ that night.
So Caiaphas gathered temple police, got some Roman soldiars and such, they assempled and Judas led them. Some scholars say that this was a very large crowd, Somewhere between 600-1000 people (mainly Roman soldiers. Since Judas was one of the twelve disciples he knew that Jesus would be in that garden so he led the way to where Jesus was. This wasn't a calm and collected crowd, this was a crowd armed and ready. they had swords and clubs.
Judas had given them a signal - the one that he kisses is the one that they were to arrest.
Judas greeted Jesus all friendly like and kissed him on the cheek. Jesus asked Judas; are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?
Jesus approached the huge crowd and asked them what they want, they said that they wanted Jesus. Jesus said "I AM" and everyone fell to the ground when Jesus said that.
When the diciples realized that was about to happen they asked Him "Lord shoud we stricke them with our swards?
Simon Peter then drew out his sward and struck the high preists servant, Malchus cutting his right ear Jesus told him to put away the sword, and he calms the crowd.
Jesus then questions the people, 'why have you come at night to arrest me; you've had lots of opportunities during the daytime when I've been with you in the temple. Jesus wasn't happy, he remained calm, dignified and powerful while being arrested, but he was carful in pointing out their inconsistencies, he wanted them to know that they were being hypocritical and wrong.
Jesus was taken to 6 separate trials within the next 8 hours or so.
We will take a look at those different trials in the next post. .
